SUMMARY:2023 Fall FloraFest
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, October 7th\, for the fall FloraFest native plant sale!  Fall is a great time to plant\, as the cooler temperatures mean less stress for your new plants\, and we will have lots of great selections for you to choose from. \nThe preliminary plant list for fall 2023 is now available! See the list of plants HERE. \nFor information about the sale location\, shopping details including that payments are only with credit or debit card\, and volunteer opportunities\, click HERE. \nNative plants are beautiful\, and they help conserve water\, require less maintenance\, and are more cold-hardy than plants from other parts of the world. Native plants also provide food and habitat for birds\, bees\, and butterflies. Using native plants in your yard is one step that we can take to help restore a healthy ecosystem in El Paso. \nFloraFest is the primary fundraiser for the maintenance and operation of the Chihuahuan Desert Gardens. Shoppers can visit with local Master Gardeners\, horticulturists\, and other plant experts for advice on how to care for their plants at home. We sell mostly native and native-adapted (plants that are not native to our region but will grow well here) plants\, many of which are not available at local nurseries or retailers. \nPlease join our mailing list to keep informed about the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens. CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:The Evolution of the Sagittectomy
DESCRIPTION:Join us in learning about the First Recorded Surgical Operation in North America at the first medical school on the US/Mexican border. Dr. Alan Tyroch\, founding chair of surgery and trauma medical director\, will explore Cabeza de Vaca’s journey as recorded in La Relación. Cabeza de Vaca was one of Tom Lea’s recurring characters. For the 50th anniversary of the Texas Surgical Society in 1965\, he created a sketch that can be found in the lobby of the Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine\, given by El Paso plastic surgeon Ronald Gum and his wife\, Mary Ann. The finished ink wash painting is on display at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. You can also visit the archetypes of El Paso history in the lobby of the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing. Founding Dean Jeanne Novotney believed that the nobility and determination of Lea’s heroes in the historic federal courthouse downtown would inspire nursing students today. Dean Stephanie Woods and President Rick Lange will join us for wine and Native American light bites afterward\, celebrating TTUHSC El Paso’s inclusion on the Tom Lea Trail.
