Join us as we celebrate the history and significance of Soul Food! Led by MD305 Soul Food, this hands-on workshop for kids (ages 5 – 18) will explore the foodways, history, and culture behind this uniquely American tradition. Along the way, participants make their own banana pudding to enjoy with their family at the end of the workshop.
Kids’ Table focuses around the idea much of history and culture are wrapped up in food, from tracing how ingredients came to be a part of a dish to understanding how and when the dish is typically served. Kids’ Table workshops aim to explore these different meaningful (and delicious!) aspects of food through interactive demonstrations. By bringing together learning about history with hands-on preparation, Kids’ Table workshops help foster cultural exchange and kitchen skills at the same time.
Kids’ Table: Soul Food will explore the ways in which Soul Food blended together techniques and flavors from West African, Central African, Western European, and Indigenous cuisines to create an entirely new genre of cooking. Previous Kids’ Table workshops have focused on atole and the tradition of corn in Mexican cuisine as well as gỏi cuốn (spring rolls) and the importance of rice in Vietnamese cooking.
